😮‍💨 Scooter ridership in Italy falls 30%

It’s been one month since Italy’s new Highway Code came into effect, requiring scooter riders to wear helmets. Fines of €50-100 are being dished out to users that break the law.

Concerns were that this would have a negative impact on ridership, as operators stated that it was unrealistic to equip their scooters with helmets. This is exactly what has happened.

Ridership has dropped by an estimated 30%, with operators set to miss out on €300 million in revenue and putting 1,200 jobs at risk.

In Busto Arsizio, operators are considering withdrawing. Operators across Italy will be looking closely into the financial viability of each of their cities in the coming weeks and months.

⚙️ Villo in need of TLC

Brussels’ bike sharing system Villo has been suffering from poorly maintained bikes in recent weeks. There have been delays in the delivery of parts, which has caused the maintenance of the bikes to be delayed.

JCDecaux is addressing the situation by repairing the bikes and improving maintenance, but the issue has caused disruptions in the availability and reliability of the service for commuters.

Villo was introduced in 2008, and the contract held by JCDecaux expires in September 2026. The Brussels Region is not in favour of an extension.
