🚲 Madrid commits to BiciMAD

Credit: EMT Madrid

One month ago, Madrid announced that they would be cancelling the city’s shared scooter services. Now they have gone one step further and announced that free-floating bike services will be scrapped too.

It does not come as a massive surprise. When the authorisations for private operators were issued, BiciMAD was made up of 2,964 bikes across 258 stations - now it is 7,500 bikes across 611 stations. It is, therefore, the opinion of the city that these private schemes are no longer necessary.

💵 More green needed to go Green

EIT Urban Mobility finds that an investment of €1.5 trillion into sustainable urban mobility by 2050 will be needed to meet the goals of the EU Green Deal.

Zag Daily writes that EIT’s study also found that ‘shifting to active travel modes like walking and cycling could generate €1,170 in health savings per capita by 2050, and reduce traffic fatalities by up to 70%’.

A key statistic from the report is that the benefits of transitioning to sustainable urban mobility are 60% to 150% higher than the costs, taking into account all external cost savings when reducing emissions.
