🚦 False start for bikes in Barcelona

Barcelona - the host of the start of the 2026 Tour de France - is facing delays in launching its new private bike-sharing contracts, with one potential operator still in limbo. The city renewed its shared mobility licences, maintaining a fragmented system with 7 (possibly 8) companies managing nearly 4,000 bikes.

The new contract, awarded in December, follows a similar model with seven confirmed operators: RideMovi, Bolt, Bird, Voi, Lime, Cooltra & Donkey Republic. An eighth operator, Hello Bike, is still undergoing evaluation, and if rejected, its licenses will be redistributed.

It is reported that some operators, including Lime and Voi, are facing integration issues with the city’s tracking platform. Despite primarily targeting tourists (Bicing remains restricted to residents), all operators will be integrated into Smou the public MaaS app.

The timing of this contract coincides with discussions about the future of Barcelona’s public Bicing system and its potential integration with the metropolitan AMBici network. The repeated fragmentation of the market raises concerns about long-term sustainability and operational efficiency.
