🚲 Barcelona completes shared mobility shake-up

After licences were awarded for Barcelona’s new regional moped service in December, 7 dockless bike providers have been chosen for a period of 2 years. The total fleet size is 3,478 bikes. All operators have 497 or 496 bikes each.

The operators chosen: Donkey Republic, Ridemovi, Cooltra, Bolt, Lime, Bird & Voi.

If we rewind 4 years, when the city granted licences for moped operations, we found that not all companies could operate a financially viable service. The same is true today: with 500 bikes per operator, and 7 operators, there are concerns that each operator will be able to reach break-even.

Plus, do 7 different services/apps provide the best experience for end-users?

It’s important to note that new regulations have been introduced in Spain about pavement riding. From 1st February, fines of €500 will be given for scooters or bikes caught using their vehicles on pavements, protecting public spaces and pedestrians.

🇵🇱 Poland’s bike sharing resurgence

Given the tumultuous couple of years that bike sharing has had in Poland (multiple schemes closed down due to lack of funding), 2024 turned out to be a pretty good year. nextbike Poland published some statistics about their year that were encouraging.

In 2024, more than 80 Polish cities had access to 18,000 nextbike bikes, 52.4% more than in 2023. Trips surpassed 8.7 million, an 8% increase, covering 25 million kilometres.

Other successful schemes, like the Mevo scheme in Tri-City (run by Inurba), prove that the future is bright for bike sharing in Poland!
