🚲 The best ranking bike share cities

In a new study, Cycling Industries Europe looks to compare bike sharing across Europe, benchmarking the performance of 148 EU cities. The study will help policymakers and industry leaders better understand what makes a bike sharing scheme work, and to identify where the best cycling schemes take place.

The webinar on Sept 16th is the first official launch of the study. CIE also plans to address the launch of this new project at the CIE 2024 Summit in Brussels which brings together industry heads from across the cycling world in early October.

Fluctuo is proud to have contributed to data collection and analysis on all 148 cities, and we hope to see you all at the webinar, to watch the next step in European cycling unfurl.

♻️ Recycling shared bikes spare parts

In 2020, the reputation of the bike-sharing industry was significantly affected by the images of Jump's red bikes being scrapped after the company's acquisition by Lime and the graveyards of bikes abandoned by Chinese operators.

However, things seem to have changed: In France, Smovengo, which operates the Vélib bike-sharing service in Paris, is going to purchase the bikes from another system. In November 2023, the city of Vannes (western France) decided to end the service Véloceo and was looking for a buyer for its bikes and stations. Smovengo has acquired Vannes' equipment to maximize the recovery of all parts compatible with the Vélib system.

Overall, it would be relevant for the shared mobility industry to work on establishing common standards (for batteries, IoT devices) to facilitate the transfer and recycling of equipment between operators and cities.
