😰 Voi improves financial situation but must get leaner

Despite a mild winter, scooter companies are still needing to make cuts to get to profitability. This week, Voi announced that they would lay off 120 employees, or 12% of its workforce.

The move, focusing on office roles, aims to carry on improving the company’s profitability: CEO Fredrik Hjelm insists that “central overhead costs were reduced by nearly 50% since mid-2022”, and local teams are “largely unaffected by the changes”.

⚡Electric bikes become a necessity for citizens

Recent figures from Barcelona’s Bicing show once again that electric bike demand dwarves mechanical bike demand. Electric bikes account for 58% of the fleet but were used for 80.9% of trips.

Cities like New York and Paris will be familiar with the operational challenges of offering electric and mechanical bikes (e.g. electric bike availability, more repairs). But London has struggled to implement enough electric bikes, despite having recently adding 1,400 e-bikes.

With an insufficient number of electric bikes, and external competition with Forest and Lime, ridership has fallen from 11.5m in 2022 to 8.5m in 2023.
