Why scooter ridership fell 9%

We released the European Index Annual Review 2024 last week.

👉 Whilst ridership grew 5% across all modes, scooter ridership decreased 9%.

Many suspected this correction, largely due to the tightening of fleet caps (e.g. Berlin, Brussels), but there were also other factors at play.

The merger between Dott and TIER had a substantial impact on fleet size as the company decided to exit markets across Europe (e.g. Lille), to focus on the ones with proven revenue potential. It is also the first time that we can see the full impact of the Paris decision to ban scooters, (effective from September 2023).

⛔️ Miles quits Belgium

Despite incredible success in Germany, Miles Mobility is leaving Belgium: faced with vandalism and misuse, the operator is withdrawing its 1,400 shared cars to refocus on Germany.

Last January, Miles announced its intention to review its Belgian operations with the aim of fundamentally reorganizing them. Miles' departure highlights the challenges facing the sector in Brussels, where vandalism is “hampering the development of shared mobility”, while demand remains strong.

Poppy remains the last major player in Belgium and, according to its CMO, it is down to their tech stack: “Our tech stack analyses millions of data points daily, allowing us to detect and prevent fraud, misuse, and operational inefficiencies on our fleet of 2000+ vehicles. All of this has been possible thanks to the resilience and pragmatism of our team, and the unwavering support of our founding shareholder, D'Ieteren”.
