TOP STORIES 🔥
🛴 Malta ban scooters
From March 2024 onwards, a ban on electric scooters will come into force in Malta. Aiming instead to promote privately owned scooters, which they believe would encourage responsible usage.
Malta’s government say they have not abandoned shared mobility, and are finalising a comprehensive cycling plan by January 2024.
Bolt, Malta’s current scooter operator, hopes to change this verdict by opening up further dialogue with the city of Malta and find alternative solutions. After Paris, Malta seems to be the only city that have opted for a ban of scooters, rather than regulating like other cities including Brussels.
🛵 Operators chosen in Leeuwarden following tender
The tender results for shared moped and bike services in Leeuwarden (NL) have been announced. Check, who operated mopeds before in the city, will keep their place alongside GO Sharing who each will have the right to operate 175 mopeds.
GO Sharing & Bolt will also operate 200 electric bikes each in a contract lasting two years. As part of the strategy, more parking spaces will be made available for these new vehicles.
⬆ Scooters remain on top
Scooter ridership fell -10% in Q2 2022 compared to last year.
Across 33 cities, fleet sizes increased 7%, so TVD decreased. However, scooters still hold 42% of the modal share, remaining the most popular mode in spite of challenges such as increasing regulations and tender introductions.
