Citi Bicycle Thieves 💵

Plus, a pedal-assisted cinema, upcoming tenders in France, and Lime return to...

Hi reader,

Lyft seems to be in a spot of bother with Citi Bike, and SEAT calls it time on their shared mobility services.

Elsewhere, there are 4 new tenders to be aware of, and 11 launches.

CIE’s Report: “SHARED AMBITION”: The Potential for Bike Sharing in Europe: Benchmarking 148 Cities is now out. Fluctuo was heavily involved in creating this report, collecting and analysing bike sharing data from these 148 cities, and producing the key metrics for the report in partnership with CIE.

TOP STORIES 🔥

 💵 Citi Bicycle Thieves

Citi Bike’s Bike Angels program - created in 2016 - encourages riders to move bikes in exchange for points that could be used for merchandise, membership discounts and gift cards. However, some users have been gaming the system: monitoring the app and moving bikes from one docking station to another a few blocks away to create a need for their services - then getting paid up to $6,000 a month to ride them a short distance back.

With Lyft seeming to flip-flop between keeping their bike share business and selling it, it raises some important questions:

  • Can Lyft afford to keep the Bike Angels program alive?

  • Does it allow abusers of the system to take bikes away from the demand?

  • Can a community-based operational model work, or should the rebalancing be left to the professionals?

🤝 SEAT Mò, No Mo’

SEAT has stopped their car and moped sharing businesses after recording losses of €31.6 million, and the devaluation of subsidiaries.

One subsidiary, Connected Mobility Services, lost €10.8 million, despite doubling its turnover to €16 million.

Users were informed in February that this would be the case, but the losses indicate how difficult the sharing business can be. It also shows how automotive companies are increasingly focused on profitability and, despite record operating profits in the first half of 2024, cannot afford to burn cash in any department.
