🚀 Bike-sharing drives €305m boost to cities

A new report carried out by EY for EIT Urban Mobility and Cycling Industries Europe (CIE) finds that bike-sharing is boosting Europe’s local economies through job creation and reduced congestion, generating €305 million in annual benefits.
Shared bikes save 46,000 tonnes of CO₂ and 200 tonnes of air pollutants annually. By shifting people from cars to active mobility, they help prevent 1,000 chronic diseases, saving €40 million in healthcare costs, while easing congestion saves 760,000 hours of productivity, worth around €30 million. The sector also supports 6,000 full-time equivalent jobs across Europe.
The benefit for cities is clear: every euro spent today yields a 10 percent annual return, generating €1.10 in positive externalities. By 2030, if expansion continues, the annual benefits could rise to €1 billion, with 224,000 tonnes of CO₂ avoided, over 4,200 chronic diseases prevented, and nearly 13,000 jobs supported.
❄️ How BIXI Keeps Montréal Rolling

Last week, during the NABSA Conference held in Montréal, the Fluctuo team had the opportunity to visit BIXI’s offices and warehouses.
This open-house event, organized by BIXI and partners Lyft Urban Solutions and CycleChrome, showcased several exciting innovations shaping the future of bike sharing in Montréal.
🚲 Bike trailers available directly at stations
A new type of trailer can now be rented from a station — just like a regular BIXI bike — and attached to either a standard or electric bike. The solution is currently being tested, with around 40 trailers available across the network.
🔧 “Carrefours BIXI” — on-street repair hubs
BIXI has also introduced fully equipped repair containers installed near BIXI stations throughout Montréal. These “Carrefours BIXI” not only enable quick bike repairs but have also become friendly meeting points for BIXI riders. Each of the four existing hubs is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., staffed by two employees at all times.

Quick facts
• The BIXI bike-share system serves Montréal and nearby cities.
• In 2024, the network included 11,000 bikes (around 2,500 electric) and 900 stations.
• 13 million trips were made in 2024 — a 15 % increase from the previous year.
⛔️ Prague bans shared scooters

Prague is the latest European capital to ban shared scooters, after Paris and Madrid. From January 2026, Lime and Bolt will stop operating scooters but will continue operating with dockless bikes.
City officials said they had acted on complaints from residents over the dangers of the pavement riding, and blocking pavements or street parking spots when not in use.
“We are introducing clear rules that will clear public space from uncontrolled scooter traffic, which was often used in the city centre more as a tourist attraction than a means of transport and caused chaos on and in pedestrian zones.”, said Zdeněk Hřib, deputy mayor in charge of transport at Prague’s city hall,
