🚲 Bike schemes changing gear across Europe

This week, there were several interesting developments to station-based bike systems. In London, TfL has decided to lower prices for Santander Cycles, presumably in a bid to improve ridership faced with competition from Forest & Lime. In Milan, BikeMi demand has improved 70% compared to last year.

But perhaps the biggest story of the week was the replacement of the station-based bike scheme in Stockholm. The Stockholm eBike contract was cancelled in 2023 for lack of bike availability, due to a failure of hardware.

More than a year after the €2.48m settlement to resolve the dispute, Bolt and Voi will now launch 1,000 bikes each in a dockless program, as a de facto replacement for the public scheme.

💡Spain is the driving force behind station-based bike growth in Europe: in September 2024, €20 million was pledged to improve and expand public bike-sharing systems.

In Madrid: BiciMAD grew to 7,500 bikes, with more to come this year. Ridership reached 9.9 million - this number will move well past 10 million in 2025, especially with the city’s decision to cancel all dockless scooter and bike contracts. In Barcelona, Bicing and AMBici are both performing well, both having a fresh injection of electric bikes in 2024.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lyon’s VéloV’ moves past London’s Santander Cycles in the Top Ridership leaderboards. Early feedback on the brand new electric bikes (introduced in 2025) is overwhelmingly positive.
