Berlin’s bikeshare brakeoff ❎

Plus, shared mobility injury risk drops again, and CIE's next webinar revealed

TOP STORIES 🔥

 💶 Berlin’s bikeshare brakeoff

Contrary to original plans, the Berlin Senate will not continue financial support for a publicly operated bike-sharing system. The city's contract with the current provider, nextbike, runs until the end of June.

This decision comes as, nextbike says, the system is more successful than ever before: it recorded twice as many trips in the first quarter of 2025 (1.25 million) than in the whole of 2024.

However, this is not the end. Despite the public funding being cut, nextbike are planning to stay in Berlin and continue to run their service, with the blessing of the city. With this move come uncertainties of profitability — will the scheme be operable without public funds?

💙 Micromobility injury risk down 30% since 2021

Micro-Mobility for Europe has published a new study that finds the risk of serious injury of shared vehicles continues to drop.

Analysing 312 million scooter trips and 79 million electric bike trips in 2024, injury risk on shared micromobility vehicles is down 7.9% compared to last year, and down 29.8% since 2021 (calculated per million km travelled). The data also shows that risk of a serious injury is lower on a scooter than on an electric bike.
