TOP STORIES 🔥
🛵 Barcelona’s new moped system unveiled
The results are in for Barcelona’s huge moped tender! Public transport authority AMB has granted 5 companies with licences, for a total of 9,950 vehicles. This is a significant increase from the ~4,000 vehicles that operate today (Acciona, Cabify, Cooltra & Yego) - but the operational area will also be expanded. The breakdown is as follows:
🟠 Hori (2,050 vehicles) - new operator
🟢 Yego (2,050 vehicles)
🔵 Cooltra (1,950 vehicles)
🟢 GO Sharing (1,950 vehicles)
🔴 Acciona (1,950 vehicles)
The scheme will serve 8 cities: L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona, Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adrià de Besòs.
Expanding the operating area of shared electric mopeds to the suburbs of Barcelona makes sense. For inner-city trips, mopeds face competition from bikes, which allow faster travel thanks to dedicated bike lanes. However, for longer trips connecting Barcelona with neighbouring towns (and sometimes requiring the use of motorways), mopeds are highly suitable and provide a real alternative to cars.
Companies have 40 calendar days to complete the service rollout. Licences are valid for two years, with an option for 2 additional years.
Congratulations to the companies chosen!
🇫🇷 INDIGO to acquire Smovengo (& Velib’)
INDIGO has signed an agreement to acquire all of Smovengo's shares, as well as the acquisition of Smovengo's supply business (previously a part of Fifteen (formerly Smoove).
INDIGO Infra (a subsidiary of INDIGO Group), was a 40% shareholder of Smovengo, will now take over the entirety of the business, including the acquisition of the business of supplying Smovengo with the solutions and equipment for the Vélib' bike-sharing service.
This decision suggests that INDIGO are looking to double down on the renewal of the Velib’ system, when the current contract expires in 2032.
Whilst Velib’ is the most used bike system in the world, the losses incurred by Smovengo could reach €113m by the time the contract is up in 8 years’ time.
