🔴 🟢 A Tale of Two Cities

This week, it was announced that Bicing expects to hit 20 million trips in 2025. This would be an 5% increase in trips for the Barcelona’s bike sharing system, which is performing well after increasing the share of electric bikes in the fleet. However, whilst cities in Spain heavily-back station-based bike sharing, other cities have not followed the same path.
One example is Brussels, a city that stands out as a shared mobility success story in many respects. It boasts some of the highest usage rates in Europe, with around 8,000 dockless scooters and 7,500 dockless bikes in operation. However, this rapid growth of dockless private operators has come at the expense of Villo!, the city’s ageing public bike system. Villo! ridership has fallen by 40% over the past seven years, while dockless bike trips have surged by 61% compared to last year.
The system is approaching the end of its contract, will it be replaced with new funding and a fresh fleet, or will Brussels go the way of Berlin and suggest that the city is served well enough by private operators?
🚗 Nearly 130,000 shared cars in Europe

INVERS
INVERS has released its 2025 European Car Sharing Barometer, where car sharing fleets have grown by 8% compared to 2024. The report finds 129,000 shared cars (67,000 free-floating and 62,000 station-based), with Germany home to 35% of all vehicles.
The development of car sharing is characterised by blurred lines: models that used to be separate have started to merge. “The distinction between free-floating, station-based, peer-to-peer, and even car subscription or automated rental services has started to fade in recent years. Many operators now combine these blurred approaches and grey zones in their offerings”.
